Eutropic
We are romantic, but not historically transfigured. - David
In the words of its creators Dark Age Day Dream is “a concept record that obsesses over the nature of time! It’s our attempt to make sense of reality, so it’s full of contradictions and ambiguities.” It’s an hour-plus sonic journey which takes the basic idea of synth-pop and turns it inside-out, side-ways and upside-down. By intuitively connecting dots between synth-based musics – late 70s classic electronica, cold and new wave as well as all types of iterations of techno – Eutropic created a singular amalgam of sound: simultaneously dance-floor friendly and the perfect companion to deep introspection.
We wanted to experiment, not only with the sound, but also with the musical form and the evolving nature of music in time. - Sacha
It took over three years to write and record this material! The fact that the band’s rehearsal space is full instruments (mainly synthesizers), and suitable for recording, created the perfect conditions for sonic self-discovery via experimentation. Without any time pressure! It was also clear from the onset that the final product will be a concept record, and that it will address the idea of time, not only lyrically, but also formally. Most of the work was done as a group, with just a few patches along the way where the three band members couldn’t meet in person. Almost all of the synth lines and effects were recorded in single extended takes. Emphasis was placed on trance-inducing repetition, while standard pop song-structures were completely done away with. After a 12-song demo was completed, the group was joined by friend and producer Slade Templeton, who assisted them in completing the record and tightening the sound (quite literally). Note: Almost all of the synths and effects used during the session were analog.
Our music is neither happy nor sad. It’s just a whole world of feelings with all of their natural facets. It touches on the melancholic side, but it can also make you dance wildly and clumsily. - Dominique
Dark Age Day Dream is a very emotional and personal record, a document to three years of life with all the ups and downs that it entailed. It’s a body of work that is full of nuance, relying more on the use of gradients than solid colors or clear-cut contrasts. For listeners who love hyper-textual songwriting, there is a lot of that going on here. Sain-Exupery’s story Little Prince is referenced on Distant World, Michael Ende’s graphic novel Momo on Gray, while Terry Pratchett’s novel Thief of Time on Pieces. The choice of sub-topics is also quite a cornucopia: time travel post- apocalypse (Step Back), real-life zombies (Awake), God is dead / the new religion (Silicon God), the dehumanising effects of digital technology (Down By Law), our primal wonder and awe (Starry Sky) and much more. Due to the apparent density and the scope of this work, it was decided that the record will be released as a series of four mini-EPs (two songs each), one for every single word of the record title. The release of the final segment was highlighted by a full-length vinyl release. The idea was to give fans and critics time to digest and truly unpack these songs. Dark Age Day Dream is the debut album and was released February 5th 2021 on Aztec Records UK.
